AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) describe the same underlying shift: AI systems increasingly answer questions directly instead of handing users a list of links to click through. Whichever term you use, the practical work is identical: structure content so the system can find it, trust it, and lift it straight into an answer.
Why two names for the same thing
"AEO" grew out of the answer-engine and voice-search world (featured snippets, voice assistants, direct-answer search results). "GEO" grew out of the generative-AI world (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews). The two fields converged once generative assistants started functioning as answer engines themselves. An AI Overview and a ChatGPT response are solving the same extraction problem, just built on different underlying systems. This site defaults to "GEO" in most of its copy, but the work described on the GEO Consulting page is the same work an AEO engagement would cover.
The credential behind it
David Cox holds the AEO Fundamentals certification from HubSpot Academy, covering how LLMs surface and cite content over traditional keyword ranking, applying E-E-A-T signals to earn AI trust, structuring content for machine parsing, and the core AEO metrics: visibility score, share of voice, and citation frequency. Full details are on the About section of the homepage.
What an AEO engagement looks like here
It runs through the same nine-step process and the same Page Review / AI Visibility Audit pricing as any GEO engagement. There's no separate "AEO" service tier, because the deliverable (a page an answer engine can actually cite) is identical regardless of which term brought you here.
Common questions
What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
AEO is the practice of structuring content so answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, voice assistants, and AI-generated search results) can extract a direct answer from it and present that answer to the user, often without a click-through. It covers the same ground as GEO (Generative Engine Optimization); "AEO" and "GEO" are largely the same practice under two names that grew up in parallel.
Is AEO different from GEO?
Not meaningfully, in practice. Both describe optimizing content to be found, trusted, and quoted by AI systems rather than just ranked in a list of links. GEO tends to be the term used around generative AI assistants specifically (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot); AEO tends to be the term used around answer-first search behavior more broadly. The five-lever framework this site runs (Citability, Conversational Alignment, Authority Signals, Factual Density, Structured Clarity) applies under either label.
Are you AEO certified?
Yes. AEO Fundamentals through HubSpot Academy, covering how LLMs surface and cite content over traditional keyword ranking, applying E-E-A-T to earn AI trust, structuring content for machine parsing, and the core AEO metrics (visibility score, share of voice, citation frequency). See the credential on the About section of the homepage.
Same work, whichever name you use for it.
